  • Judge Brett Kavanaugh with his daughters and President Donald Trump at the White House after Trump announced he is nominating

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Justice Kennedy, who also spent the majority of his career in public service.

White House spokesman Raj Shah told The Washington Post that Kavanaugh built up the debt by buying season tickets to Washington Nationals games and playoff games for himself and his friends. Shah offered no additional information on the tickets or the friends they were purchased for.

"Some of the people that have come up to me at parades have said, 'Shut 'em down, do this, do that, ' and it reflects a limited understanding of how the Senate operates", Richard J. Durbin of IL, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, said this week.

Judge Kavanaugh's former law clerks said they're well aware "that women in the workplace still face challenges, inequality, and even harassment".

So far, their arguments have shown no explicit signs of winning over the two Republican senators seen as most likely to break ranks and oppose Kavanaugh: Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Kavanaugh has reportedly stopped buying season tickets. By 2017, the debts were paid off or did not meet the required threshold for reporting. Disclosures are meant to provide transparency to avoid conflicts of interest involving justices and those who do business before the court. The report stressed that the disclosures are made in broad ranges, making it hard to know exact figures.

But for Kavanaugh, the differences are stark between his finances and those of his would-be peers on the Court.

Kavanaugh has bank account worth $65,000.

The annual salary in 2018 for a circuit court judge is $220,600, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

Trump's announcement that Kavanaugh would be his pick for the Supreme Court immediately launched the highly polarized fight in the US Senate, testing both sides' abilities to unify their ranks just months ahead of the hugely consequential midterm elections. Kennedy reported assets valued between $380,000 and $1.1 million, according to the nonprofit investigative organization The Center for Public Integrity. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while Chief Justice John Roberts draws a $267,000 salary. "Whoever is appointed will be in the job for thirty or forty years".
