Del Potro and Nadal share a hug after their Wimbledon epic

  • Juan Martin del Potro is in to the last eight

Djokovic owns 12 Slam trophies, three from Wimbledon.

But win or lose the Serbian will underline his name in the record books because no two players have met more often in the Open era than Djokovic and Nadal: in second place sit Djokovic and Roger Federer who have clashed 46 times.

In their illustrious careers, they have played some hard-fought battles.

"It is always a big challenge to face Novak". Djokovic has had the air of a troubled man for most of this tournament and has been reluctant to talk about his serial flare-ups on court, against officials, fans, his box and himself.

Del Potro, whose best run at the All England Club saw him reach the semi-finals in 2013, triumphed 7-6 (7/1) 7-6 (7/5) 5-7 7-6 (7/5) to set up a last-eight meeting with Rafael Nadal. His performance matched his flawless season as he won his third Grand Slam of the calendar year. But he blew those three set points, the last with a double-fault he later called "a big mistake". After losing the first set, Nadal had to work hard to come back in the second set.

He lost to Nadal in last year's US Open.

While Nadal's rivalry with Roger Federer may be considered as the most engaging, it is the Spaniard's rivalry with Djokovic which is the most enduring.

World number one Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion at the All England Club, trails Djokovic, the 2011, 2014 and 2015 victor, 26-25 in a rivalry which began at Roland Garros 12 years ago.

Kevin Anderson has won the first set of his Wimbledon semifinal against John Isner 7-6 (6). So, too, did what happened next after Nadal won 7-5, 6-7 (7), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday and earned a trip to the semifinals at the All England Club for the first time since 2011: He went over to give del Potro a lengthy hug.

The match lasted almost five hours and it's the longest between the two players on clay. He went 4-3 in front, before closing out the set to increase the pressure on Nadal.

Djokovic took the first set 6-3 and was on course to avenge his defeat he suffered the previous year.

Wimbledon 2018 has been nothing short of a spectacle so far.

Novak Djokovic doesn't believe that introducing the shot clock is a right move.

These victories certainly cannot be viewed as a positive for subsequent rounds, although it's probably fair to say that if one player can be fresh after a five-hour match, it will be Nadal.

In the same time, I'm trying to use the experience and memories that I had on being in final stages of Grand Slams, just take things very simple, day by day. With the win Djokovic also completed seven consecutive wins against Rafael Nadal.
