Netherlands' Dylan Groenewegen (L) crosses the finish line ahead of Colombia's Fernando Gaviria to win the seventh stage of the Tour de France.

Martin was one of several team leaders along with former Tour victor Vincenzo Nibali and two-time runner-up Nairo Quintana who were caught off-guard by an attack by Quick-Step midway through the stage during a straightaway that was exposed to crosswinds.

New Zealander Dion Smith led a five-man breakaway at the start of the hilly 181 kilometre stage, which started in Brest.

Cavendish's Dimension Data team were still well placed after a double right-hander with two kilometres to go strung out the peloton, but he did not have the power needed at the top of the gradual climb to the line.

Title hopefuls Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) were the big losers of the day.

Having been boxed in the last time the Tour finished on the Mur three years ago, the punchy climber made no mistake this time when jumping off the front of the peloton with 1,200m to go and opening a gap on the highest point of the climb.

Pierre-Roger Latour threatened to snatch the stage victory from Martin, but the AG2R La Mondiale rider could not bridge the gap and had to settle for second.

Around 95km from Chartres the peloton split in a cross wind, trapping Thursday's stage victor Dan Martin (Team Emirates) in the second group.

The England regular spoke highly of fellow midfielders Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic along with Liverpool team-mate Dejan Lovren.

Dan Martin from UAE Team Emirates won his first victory at the 2018 Tour de France on the sixth stage with an early break at the Tour's first summit finish.

"I was second here last time".

"The race went so hard on the first part of the climb, I saw everyone was on the limit and there were no teammates left, so why not have a try?" Today the legs were good and everything was OK, " Groenewegen said.

BMC's Greg Van Avermaet hung on to the yellow jersey, with Team Sky's Geraint Thomas moving up to second place, three seconds down.

Chris Froome lost a little ground to finish another five seconds back.

The Welshman has been given free reign by Team Sky in the first week to race with Froome for the yellow jersey, although will be expected to revert to the role of super-domestique after the first rest day after stage nine.

Great French hope Romain Bardet (Ag2r) and last year's Giro d'Italia victor Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) were the biggest losers among the overall favourites, losing 31 seconds and 53 seconds respectively.

During his chase back to the peloton, Dumoulin took a long draft behind his team auto but race commissaires deemed it too long - and deducted a further 20 seconds from his time.
