  • Jaguar escapes New Orleans zoo enclosure, killing 4 alpacas, an emu and a fox

Officials with the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans are investigating how a jaguar escaped his enclosure this morning.

Zoo officials said it wasn't clear how Valero managed to escape his habitat. After getting out, the jaguar made its way to other enclosures and pens at which point it ended up killing six animals.

No people were injured, and the animal was secured in its night house, officials said.

There were no human injures.

The zoo announced it would be closed for the rest of the day Saturday and will reopen to the public Sunday at 10 a.m.

The big cat's enclosure is located in a part of the park called Jaguar Jungle, which is also home to a children's play area, as well as exhibits featuring bats, giant cave roaches, tarantulas and poison arrow frogs. Today is a hard day for the Audubon family.

In their statement, officials added that due to the tragic loss it has been a hard day for the staff at the Audubon Zoo and that is why they will remain closed for the rest of Saturday.
