President Trump has said he has "low expectations" ahead of a summit with Russia's Vladimir Putin, and added that he sees the European Union as a "foe" of the U.S.

This will be their first stand-alone meeting since Trump took office in January 2017.

"Most of its members our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies", he adds, which goes to the heart of why Trump just declared the EU America's "foe".

A bemused May turned him down.

The president also remarked on Strzok's explanation of his text to former Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair, telling her "we'll stop it", referencing Trump's election.

Speaking on the BBC, she said: "He told me I should sue the European Union - not go into negotiations". "Not go into negotiation, sue them".

Sunday also saw a protest march against the summit in Helsinki.

With a laugh, she added: "Actually, no. So I want us to be able to sit down, to negotiate the best deal for Britain". And I thought it was a disgrace to our country.

"It's a meeting... This is an attempt to see if we can defuse and take some of the drama, and quite frankly some of the danger, out of the relationship right now".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating United States intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the 2016 election in Mr Trump's favour.

With that in mind, a senior House of Representatives Republican told CBS's Face the Nation that Trump should ask Putin in Helsinki which airport the Russian hackers will be extradited to for being taken into USA custody.

The Helsinki summit, which comes at one of the most crucial junctures for the West since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, has alarmed some North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies who fear Mr Putin might seek a grand deal that would undermine the USA -led transatlantic alliance.

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said he was anxious about Trump being alone in the room with Putin, without his national-security aides. He kind of goes in and wings it", Mr Warner said on NBC's "Meet the Press.

"America and the European Union are best friends".

When asked by CBS if he would ask Mr Putin to extradite the Russians to the United States, Trump said he might. Russia's constitution forbids the extradition of its own citizens.

Trump has repeatedly said the investigation into suspected Russian interference in the 2016 USA election - which he casts as a "rigged witch hunt" - makes it hard for him to do substantive deals with Moscow. "But certainly, I'll be asking about it".

Trump recently took aim at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on Twitter before saying last week in a meeting with other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders that Moscow controlled Berlin because of an energy pipeline project.
