US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats has blamed the media for spinning a story about his odd reaction to the news of US President Donald Trump inviting Vladimir Putin to a second summit, saying he meant no disrespect.
This was three days after special counsel Robert Mueller's probe indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking offences related to the election.
Trump's anger over having to answer Lemire's question - not his failure in attempting to do so - lingered on.
"My people came to me - [U.S. Director of National Intelligence] Dan Coats came to me and some others - and they said they think it's Russian Federation".
"When you look at tracking, Russian Federation doesn't register on the radar for what people care about", McLaughlin said. Pretty hard to say: 'C'mon guys, don't take that too seriously.' I mean, what representative of any industry could credibly make that argument? In fact, he said Trump missed the opportunity to "distinguish" the U.S.
Rubio, calling Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega an "old man" and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, "crazy", said, "There is no future with them in power".
Now with Pompeo heading the State Department, Coats has been thrust into the limelight as the voice of the intelligence community.
That statement from Coats came only moments after Trump, standing next to Putin at a news conference in Helsinki, said he doubted those conclusions.
Speaking during MSNBC panel Sunday night, Kevin McLaughlin of Cogent Strategies Principle explained that one reason his poll numbers didn't sag is that Russian Federation doesn't seem to matter much in Trump World.

"The great mystery is why the president has not spoken up for our country", Clinton said at OZY Fest in NY on Saturday. He reiterated there had been no collusion between his campaign and Moscow, an allegation that has dogged his presidency from the start. When asked about what came out of the summit, Bossert said, "President Trump had a productive set of conversations".
The news of the invitation to the Russian leader was also confirmed on Twitter by Sarah Sanders, the White House Press Secretary.
Schumer asked the reporters, "Where are the notes from the meeting?"
In addition to his pointed remarks about Russia, Rubio also anticipated that there could be further sanctions from the US on Nicaragua, given recent violence in the Latin American nation.
And while he later acknowledged in an interview with CBS News that Putin was responsible for the effort to undermine the election, he only attributed that responsibility to Putin being "in charge of the country".
"Well I would, because he's in charge of the country". He said that because of Trump's lack of political background, there was at times a clash between Trump's approach to Putin and the more hardline approach other politicians might have delivered in his position.
"This idea that somehow we are not sure where our own president stands is deeply disturbing, and the best way to deal with that is to vote in November", she said to applause.
Mr Trump later made clear he supported the United States intelligence community's findings about Russian meddling.
In turn, national security experts said, Putin played Trump like a fiddle. "The evidence is overwhelming and the president needs to say that and act like it", Gowdy added.
