  • Francesco Molinari of Italy celebrates after putting a birdie on the 18th green after the final round for the 147th British Open Golf championships in Carnoustie Scotland Sunday

"To go the weekend bogey-free, it's unthinkable".

Francesco Molinari of Italy, right, and Tiger Woods of the United States shake hands on the 18th hole after the final round for the 147th British Open Golf championships in Carnoustie, Scotland, Sunday, July 22, 2018. He shot an 8-under 276. He became the first Italian to capture a major championship.

Molinari broke out of the pack with his first birdie of the day on the par-five 14th and up ahead McIlroy had to settle for joining Rose in the clubhouse lead after failing to birdie the last.

A deafening roar reverberated around the course when he sunk a long birdie putt on the fourth to move to within three of the lead along with playing partner Francesco Molinari.

Schauffele had to hole out a wedge on the final hole to force a playoff, and the ball checked up well short.

Molinari would be the first Italian to win a major championship.

But it was the gains from Woods at four and six that had the Carnoustie crowds buzzing.

"Clearly, in my group, the attention wasn't really on me, let's put it that way", Molinari said, the gleaming claret jug in front of him. But I felt really good this morning.

Pepperell teed off at 11.40 a.m. local time with Phil Mickelson. He is renowned as one of the best players in the game from tee to green, with an inconsistent putter his only weakness.

Francesco Molinari and Kevin Chappell sit alongside Fleetwood, while Erik van Rooyen and Alex Noren were four off the pace.

A charging Woods had taken the lead with nine holes to play as the leaders suffered in the testing winds.

Spieth was tied for the lead with Schauffele and Kisner overnight but slipped away with a closing 76 to end four under.

It meant scoring was serene in the early holes for the leaders, though Tommy Fleetwood birdied the first to sit three shots off Spieth and co-leader Xander Schauffele.

All of them made mistakes, big and small.

Woods Off To Promising Start As Kisner Falls Away In Open Finale

The 42-year-old, who won the last of his 14 majors a decade ago, has rolled back the clock at Carnoustie and after a sizzling third-round 66 he was at it again. The American topped the leaderboard until his hopes nosedived following a double-bogey at the 11th and another dropped stroke at the next hole.

The Silver Medal awarded to the leading amateur went to Scotland's Sam Locke, who finished on 293 after a week he will remember for the rest of his life.

The round ties the low at Carnoustie shot in the final round in 2007 by Steve Stricker and Richard Green.

Rory McIlroy was bogeying two of his first five holes.

Jordan Spieth of the United States, left, and Kevin Chappell of the USA finish the third round of the British Open Golf Championship in Carnoustie, Scotland, Saturday July 21, 2018.

Kisner, who has led or co-led after every round, found trouble in a fairway bunker at the second, needing two attempts to get out of the sand and making double bogey to fall two back.

Leaders are on the range at the British Open, where they will be greeted by warm breezes in the final round at Carnoustie.

Even defending champion Jordan Spieth seemed ordinary, in a round where he was doing some extraordinary things.

Further trouble and another dropped shot was to follow at the next and it was with his head bowed deep in thought he strode down the par-three 13th where he managed to stem the haemorrhage with a par.

Tiger Woods admits contending at the Open felt just like the old days and was delighted his two children finally got to see what all the fuss was about.

There is no question that Tiger Woods is a contender once again and that is all that matters.

Jordan Spieth was tied for the lead at Carnoustie as he tries to become the first repeat victor in 10 years at the British Open.

But in his traditional last-day red shirt he continued where he left off the previous day to turn the screws on those above him. He was four shots behind.
