  • Ohio State University is investigating former team doctor Richard Strauss after several former wrestlers came forward earlier this year

Since the investigation began, the firm has interviewed more than 150 former students or witnesses, and former student-athletes from at least 14 men's sports teams have alleged sexual misconduct by Strauss. Other patients of Strauss' private practice, which was started in 1996, also lodged complaints against him. Since that time, the independent investigators at Perkins Coie LLP, an worldwide law firm with expertise in these matters, have completed interviews with more than 200 former students and university staff believed to have information concerning the allegations involving Strauss.

Investigators also expect to conduct more than 100 additional interviews and are also "in regular communication" with the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office, Ohio State said.

New details of an independent investigation into sexual allegations against Strauss were announced by Ohio State University officials on Friday. Strauss, who died of suicide in 2005, was the team doctor from 1978 to 1995.

Ohio State has urged anyone with information to contact the investigators from Seattle-based law firm Perkins Coie, who are looking into the allegations, what university officials knew and how they responded to any concerns about Strauss.

A lawsuit by four former Ohio State University wrestlers alleges the school failed to stop "rampant sexual misconduct" by a now-dead team doctor despite being repeatedly informed about his behavior.

The head coach back then, Russ Hellickson, similarly has said he would have reported any abuse if he had been aware of it.

Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith was scheduled to appear in Delaware (Ohio) Municipal Court on Wednesday after he was arrested on May 12 and charged with one count of criminal trespassing. In an interview with CNN, he said he told Strauss that his wrestlers were uncomfortable showering with the doctor.

Ohio State said it is reviewing the lawsuit but didn't comment further about it. He left Ohio State not long after the university held a hearing on complaints against him in 1997, but the school took no legal or disciplinary action, the lawsuit said.

Strauss was a university staff physician during the 1970s, '80 and '90s for several varsity sports, the school's medical center and student health clinic.

The lawsuit cites the initial report from NBC News from other victims who said they told Jordan about the abuse but were ignored. They show he complained about Strauss by phone - not a letter, as he'd recalled - and got a response from health center director Ted Grace.
