  • Spain's Omar Fraile celebrates a she crosses the finish line to win the 14th stage of the 105th edition of the Tour de France cycling race between Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux and Mende

"I can only renew my appeals for calm, for common sense, with regards to the riders who make up the Tour de France".

Sunday's 15th stage is a 181.5-km road race from Millau to Carcassonne ahead of the second rest day and three stages in the Pyrenees that could shake up the overall standings.

Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin remain locked in a three-way battle for the Tour de France yellow jersey after strengthening their grip on the podium positions on Saturday.

"I would like to offer my honest apologies to both Elie Gesbert and Team Fortuneo Samsic for this unacceptable incident".

Vincenzo Nibali has been forced to withdraw from the Tour de France due to back injuries sustained in a crash on stage 12 of the iconic race.

The 24-year-old Moscon was suspended by Sky for six weeks last year for using a racial slur against an opponent.

Thomas won two mountain stages, including the queen alpine stage at the top of the Alpe d'Huez, to take and consolidate the overall lead as team mate Froome appeared slightly less in form after winning the Giro d'Italia in May.

With only one climb for the riders to slog up on today's stage, the chances of another attack on Froome were minimised.

After the stage it was announced that Team Sky's Gianni Moscon had been disqualified from the race, with the team due to issue a statement on the matter.

For months, the Briton was embroiled in controversy after a sample from the 2017 Tour of Spain revealed twice the permitted amount of the asthma drug salbutamol in his system.

"The way I see it, I'd rather be in this jersey having the race of my life and getting booed than being 30th and dropped on the first climb and everyone cheering me on".

Froome is aiming to join Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the only riders to win the Tour five times.

Thomas leads Froome by 1 minute, 39 seconds.

Thomas has said that although he would work to support Froome, he is not going to intentionally lose time.

Thomas said the situation was "not nice", and that perhaps journalists should ask the public why Sky is perceived negatively.

"Afterwards you can always say it was too early, this and that, but it was a big group with some strong climbers, and I had to go before and not wait until they ripped it apart", said Stuyven. "We'll take each day as it comes". "It is what it is and I am enjoying it still". While domestique riders often eat and undergo a massage within an hour or so of the finish, the race leader does not receive his post-race pampering until far later.
