  • Turks in Berlin rally around Ozil in racism row

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness has launched an astonishing attack on Mesut Ozil, following the Arsenal players decision to call time on his Germany career.

And the country's Sports Minister Mehmet Kasapoglu said the player had taken an "honourable stance". "During my childhood, my mother taught me to always be respectful and to never forget where I came from, and these are values that I think about to this day".

Mesut Ozil is widely viewed as one of the most talented players on the German national soccer team. I used to wear the German shirt with such pride and excitement, but now I don't.Racism should never, ever be accepted.

Ozil made debut at the global level against Norway back in February 2009 and was since then an integral part of Joachim Löw's team, which even lifted the World Cup back in 2014.

Ozil was also part of the German squads which reached the semi-finals of 2014 World Cup and two European Championships in 2012 and 2016. Some German politicians questioned their loyalty to Germany and suggested they should be removed from the squad. He was part of the team that won the World Cup in 2014.

He also furiously denounced disparaging remarks by former captain Lothar Matthaeus, who he noted "met with another world leader a few days back and received nearly no media criticism" in an apparent reference to an appearance with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ozil, who also plays for English club Arsenal, said German Football Association (DFB) President Reinhard Grindel had blamed him for Germany´s poor performance in Russian Federation.

Ozil, who is of Turkish descent, cited comments from far-right politicians and football supporters when he said he would "no longer be playing for Germany at worldwide level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect".

Ozil said that despite the timing of the picture with teammate Ilkay Gundogan and Erdogan - shortly before the president won re-election - "it wasn't about politics or elections, it was about me respecting the highest office of my family's country".

Ozil made his Germany debut under Low in February 2009 and went on to win 92 caps, scoring 23 goals.

Ozil and Gundogan, who both have Turkish roots, were booed by German fans in pre-World Cup friendlies after posing with Erdogan in May in London.

Citing anti-Turkish comments from German politicians and his fans, Ozil announced in his Twitter posts on Sunday that he was leaving the national team "with a heavy heart".

"Like many people, my ancestry traces back to more than one country".

The DFB said it "regrets the departure of Mesut Ozil from the national team" and remain "very thankful for his outstanding performances in the Germany national team shirt".

A spokeswoman for chancellor Angela Merkel, whose decision to allow hundreds of thousands of migrations into Germany in 2015 sparked a fierce debate in Europe about migration - said Monday that most of the roughly three million people with Turkish roots living in Germany were well-integrated.

Quoted by German newspaper Bild, Hoeness said: "I'm glad this nightmare is over".

The picture led to criticism of Ozil in Germany. For me, it didn't matter who was president, it mattered that it was the president.
