Every year on 28 July, the world comes together to commemorate World Hepatitis Day (WHD). About 130-170 million people worldwide are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus, and more than 250,000 people die from hepatitis C-related liver diseases each year.

Out of the 325 million people living with viral hepatitis globally, upward of 290 million (that's 9 in 10!) are living with the hepatitis B or hepatitis C and don't know it. As common as hepatitis C is, it's also known as a silent killer because it's a liver disease that rarely comes with a warning and symptoms often don't appear until the liver is severely damaged.

"Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the World Health Organisation elimination target of a 30% diagnosis rate by 2020".

"Hepatitis is a viral disease that affects the liver, it is simply an inflammatory of the liver (acute and chronic)". Most of the times, people ignore the symptoms and receive treatment in the later stages of the infection. Hepatitis A usually spreads when a person unknowingly ingests the virus from objects, food or drinks contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person. Most of the hepatitis cases, doctors warn, end up in the cancer of liver.

Viral hepatitis is a cause for major health care burden in India and is now equated as a threat comparable to the "big three" communicable diseases - HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. The seminar was attended by the representatives of blood banks, blood donor organizations, NGOs, university and college students and other partners. What is alarming is that Hepatitis B and C are chronic infections with the symptoms remaining dormant for as long as decades and at least 60 per cent of liver cancer occurs because of delay in the testing and treatment of viral Hepatitis B and C. Direct treatment for hepatitis A is not now available, but there is a highly effective vaccine that individuals with risk factors should get. For World Hepatitis Day this year, WHO's theme was: "Test. Treat. Hepatitis".

About 73-thousand people in BC are living with hepatitis B or C, with many people not realizing they have contracted it.

According to a survey conducted by the Hepatology Society, about 10 million people in Bangladesh are infected with either hepatitis B or C. Men who have sex with men can become hepatitis C positive, due to the greater potential for blood-to-blood contact during sex.

To make that happen, health workers must have better access to quality point-of-care diagnostics and laboratory testing.

She said the government is working relentlessly to reach the updated healthcare facilities at the doorsteps of the people and to ensure the standard of the health services. "A large study from India has shown that out of 18,589 people screened, HBV infection was detected in 303 (prevalence 1.63%) and HCV infection in 56 (prevalence 0.3%)".
