  • Pitcher Roberto Osuna who was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays after being charged with domestic assault

A crucial pickup at the trade deadline often galvanizes a major league clubhouse, energizing players appreciative that their front office went the extra mile in an effort to win a championship. From a baseball perspective, Hinch said the trade makes ideal sense due to Osuna's ability.

General Manager Jeff Luhnow said they did their due diligence and spoke to many people who know Osuna.

It's incredibly hard to come back from something like this, even if you are innocent, and Osuna and the Blue Jays both would have faced a lot of public wrath. 'We don't know the details of much. I haven't really paid attention to (Osuna's case), for obvious reasons - it wasn't really in my life. We are confident that Osuna is remorseful, has willfully complied with all consequences related to his past behavior, has proactively engaged in counseling, and will fully comply with our zero tolerance policy related to abuse of any kind.

The Houston Astros picked up right-handed reliever Roberto Osuna from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday in exchange for a package that includes former Astros closer Ken Giles.

'I am excited to join the Houston Astros and move forward with a fresh start to my career, ' Osuna said about the trade in a press release. Major League Baseball looks bad because (accused) domestic abusers are eligible for the postseason despite a suspension while players who are suspended for the use of performance-enhancing drugs are not eligible for the postseason.

In the same statement, Osuna used phrases such as "fresh start", "move forward" and "positive contribution", and he concluded, "I thank Jeff Luhnow and the entire Astros organization for believing in me - I will not let them down". It's not that the team couldn't have used him, but I honestly believe they're better served moving on from the PR battle that would come with having him around, at least for quite a while. He's expected to plead not guilty in Toronto on Wednesday. Not only is he brilliant on the mound, with a 2.93 ERA before his suspension, an all-star berth in 2017 and 104 career saves at such a young age, but he is also making just $5.3 million this season and is under club control through 2020. He was an All-Star a year ago, when he went 3-4 with 39 saves and a 3.38 ERA.
