The website added the Cleveland Indians have had regular talks about a possible Harper deal, but those discussions have not picked up any momentum.

The Nats GM also confirmed that starter Gio Gonzalez and "entire bullpen" would be staying put in Washington alongside Harper, per MLB Network Insider Bob Nightengale.

Major League Baseball executives on other teams are skeptical the Nationals will make a deal today.

There's also this from the Washington Post's Jorge Castillo, who said ownership is making the call on this one.

Harper is a free agent at the end of the season, and the Nationals face the prospect of losing him then to another team without getting anything in return. "I believe in this team". With Harper and other free agents coming off the books next year, this team's payroll could plummet to $140 million or beyond.

The Yankees, who traded for starting pitcher Lance Lynn Monday, have been heavily linked with Harper as a potential landing spot for him this offseason.

Harper is hitting.220 with 62 RBIs this season.

Despite our best hopes that Bryce Harper being on the block would be a fun-as-heck rumor to track today (even if the Cubs didn't make sense as a suitor), it sounds like the Nationals are making it very official that he's not going anywhere. Washington is 5 1/2 games out of first place in the NL East, with Stephen Strasburg on the disabled list and the clubhouse in disarray.

And therein lies another awkward part of all this, that while the Nationals did not want anyone to know they would be listening on Harper, they can not deny it now.
