A Wisconsin man had to have all his limbs amputated after he contracted a severe infection, likely from a dog lick.

Greg Manteufel went to the hospital with what he thought was the flu, local news outlet Fox 6 Now reported yesterday (July 30).

"It hit him with a vengeance - just bruising all over him", said his wife, Dawn Manteufel. The disease had made it look as if someone had beat him up with a baseball bat, which had shocked both of them. Blood tests revealed that a bacterial pathogen found in saliva of healthy dogs and cats had caused the infection.

The CDC also says that although infections are usually associated with dog or cat bites, some people can develop the infection after close contact with one of those animals - especially if in contact with a dog's saliva. In Manteufel's case, it caused a critical drop in blood pressure and circulation.

"It took a week and they were taking his legs", said his wife.

In 2016, doctors in London documented the case of a 70-year-old woman who had been infected with Capnocytophaga. "Surgery is scheduled to remove a portion of both hands as the damage from the sepsis is too extensive", according to a GoFundMe page set up for his family. Her husband has a history of good health and spent his life around dogs, which is why it caught them off guard. To save his life, doctors had to cut his legs from the knee down, and then his hands.

Within days of being admitted to the hospital, Manteufel had to have both of his feet amputated.

"Sometimes it decreases so much that the arms and legs just die", said Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist at the Medical College of Wisconsin. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the bacteria Capnocytophaga live in the mouths of dogs and cats.

After discovering the Manteufels have a pet dog named Ellie, the medical staff told Dawn that her husband likely was infected after being licked. "It's just chance", Dr. Munoz-Price added. Although many people may not show any symptoms of the infection, those with compromised immune systems can face severe illness. While the infection had been seen before in people who'd been bitten by dogs, the doctors noted it was highly unusual that this woman apparently contracted it from her dog who had licked her.
