Maduro was unharmed during the attack, but seven national guard troops were injured, according to Venezuelan information minister Jorge Rodríguez.

He added that "several" drones loaded with explosive charges "detonated near the presidential platform".

He said Maduro was safe and in a meeting with his cabinet and top military officials, and that the wounded men were being treated.

Venezuelan blogger Larissa Costas has tweeted that Maduro is "well".

State television showed him cutting short a speech as hundreds of soldiers broke ranks and scattered.
