  • Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirier Booked For UFC 230

For the past two years, Diaz maintained his sole interest was a trilogy against McGregor but a victory over Poirier would strengthen his hand in terms of orchestrating that.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Diaz will be competing in the co-main event of UFC 230 which takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Then, after Diaz and his fighter brother, Nick, engaged McGregor in a bottle-and-can throwing exchange during a pre-fight news conference, he lost to McGregor by decision in one of the most thrilling bouts in the organization's history. Diaz (19-11) is considered one of the top stars in the sport.

A main event for the card hasn't been finalized, but it would have to be a huge bout to overshadow Diaz's long-awaited return.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov Announced For UFC 229
As it played, Diaz abruptly left the presser he was at and tweeted "I'm not fighting on that show (expletive) the UFC ". Many thought that Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov would be in attendance, but alas they were not.

Diaz, meanwhile, will have a chance to prove he can be a draw without McGregor, with his two fights against the former lightweight champion generating a combined 2.9 million pay-per-view buys. One was a no-contest past year that Poirier answered Saturday by knocking out Alvarez in the second round of the UFC Fight Night event in Calgary. "The Diamond" has won three consecutive event headliners by knockout, stopping former UFC champ Anthony Pettis, former WSOF champ Justin Gaethje and, most recently at UFC on FOX 30 last weekend, former UFC and Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez.

The card will also include a rematch between former middleweight champions Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold.

The bout is expected to be officially confirmed later today at a special UFC conference prior to the UFC 227 weigh-ins in Los Angeles.
