  • Victims ranged in age from an 11-year-old boy to a 62-year-old man

The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune compiled the totals. Patrol Chief Fred Waller said that gang members are using large summer crowds as cover in some cases.

The city's police chief said some of the incidents were targeted and others were gang related.

At least 71 people were shot, including 10 fatally, over the weekend in Chicago, marking a chilling spasm of violence for a city that has struggled with murders and shootings in recent years even as the national homicide rate hovers near historic lows.

Of the wounded who gave their age, the oldest was 62 and the youngest 11, according to police records.

Hospitals in Chicago were overwhelmed over the weekend dealing with the victims of gun violence.

Johnson told reporters there were some promising leads in investigations of the weekend bloodshed, but he did not elaborate and provided few updates on crime statistics for the third most populous US city.

Similar to the past Galaxy Note series handsets, the new model is likely to come in both Exynos and Snapdragon SoC options. Since the first Note phone was launched seven years ago, the company has developed a huge Galaxy Note fanbase.

Waller said the spike in crime was not a result of police resources being redirected to the Lollapalooza music festival held in the city at the weekend.

City spokesman Dan Regan told the Chicago Tribune that the violence was so bad at one point that the emergency department at Mount Sinai Hospital stopped accepting new victims. Chicago's murder rates also dropped significantly a year ago, dropping from 771 in 2016 to 650 in 2017, according to local affiliate CBS Chicago.

Chicago saw at least 40 people shot - including four fatalities - on Sunday. The violence included seven shootings in which three or more people were shot.

Johnson said the police department can not reduce shootings without help from residents identifying the shooters, many of whom are repeat offenders.

The Sunday shootings occurred between midnight and 2 p.m., records show. At 6:50 a.m. Sunday, one man was killed and four others wounded in a shooting in the first block of North Leclaire Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, police said. "I promise you it is not.No, we are behind the eight ball a little bit sometimes in trying to get people incarcerated, repeat offenders, we are behind the eight ball with that", he added. Giuliani originally tweeted, "Policing genius Jerry McCarthy can do for Chicago what I did for NYC", in reference to former Chicago Police Superintendent and current mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy.

According to a authorities, roughly 5,500 guns have been taken off the streets this year and shootings have decreased compared to last year.
