  • Robert Redford says he's retiring from acting

"And why not go out with something that's very upbeat and positive?" he added, confirming he planned to stick to the retirement plan he first announced in 2016.

He continued, "So, I'm thinking of moving in that direction and not acting so much". He starred in "Our Souls at Night" with Jane Fonda a year ago and now plays a life-long bank robber and prison escapee in "The Old Man & The Gun" with Sissy Spacek and Casey Affleck, which will be released on September 28. Each time he was jailed but managed to escape.

"To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life", he told Entertainment Weekly.

His most recent role before The Old Man & The Gun came past year with the romantic drama Our Souls at Night, which also starred Jane Fonda.

Redford made his movie debut in 1962 as a supporting player in a Korean War drama, "War Hunt". This news from Entertainment Weekly may be sad for Robert Redford's fans, but at 81, can we really blame the actor for wanting to retire? The studio didn't want Redford, and it was the intervention of Newman and director George Roy Hill that landed him the part.

Still, even with his acting career entering its retirement phase, it is unlikely Redford will stay completely out of the business. He also became a producer and a champion for independent film, founding the Sundance Institute and eventually becoming the chairman of the Sundance Film Festival, which remains the best known and largest film festival held annually in the United States.

In addition, Redford has also served as director on a number of films, including his directorial debut Ordinary People in 1980, A River Runs Through It in 1992 and The Horse Whisperer in 1998.

Over the course of his long career in Hollywood, Redford has been honored with a number of wins and nominations for prestigious awards, including for the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, SAG Awards and many others. He was nominated for Best Actor in 1973 for "The Sting", and critics were shocked when he was passed over for a nomination for his solo performance in 2013′s "All Is Lost". At the time, he was still at work on two films, including "The Old Man & The Gun" and Netflix's "Our Souls At Night" co-starring Jane Fonda.
