Where can you actually find $1 beer in Ontario?

  • Ontario government to announce buck-a-beer plan

On Tuesday morning, Premier Doug Ford will be at the Barley Days Brewery in Picton to announce the new minimum price of a bottle or can of beer will be $1. It's up to brewers to actually pass down the savings of $1 beer to consumers. "They created a new rule, another piece of red tape that made a buck-a-beer illegal", said Mr. Ford.

A partial or year-round promotional arrangement for even one brewer selling buck-a-beer in the province could easily represent more than $100,000 in lost revenue to the LCBO.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said at Queen's Park on Tuesday there is no doubt Ford's plan will cost the LCBO money.

Today, the retail price floor sits at $1.25.

The lower price, which is limited to beer with an alcohol volume of less than 5.6 per cent, will take effect on August 27 and is expected to be reflected on store shelves on Labour Day weekend.

Brewers would not be required to charge less, however, and the lower minimum price would not apply to draft beer, nor would it include the bottle deposit.

Paul Meek with Kitchesippi Beer Company isn't on board with the idea.

It is unknown if any additional Ontario craft breweries will participate.

At the time, the Liberals defended their move by saying a price hike would result in people drinking less.

He's not the only brewery thinking that way.

"Give the tax payers a break and let them have 24 cans of beer for 24 bucks".

But many folks at the Beer Store today are in.

"It would be nice to go back to that price again", added a woman.

"Lower alcohol prices can lead to increased consumption, particularly among those with alcohol problems, and among young people, and that increased consumption can in turn lead to increased alcohol-related problems, including impaired driving".

Many have questioned Ford's timing on this, not only because it will kick in just ahead of the Labor Day Weekend but because the announcement falls on the heels of cuts to social assistance.
