  • The Day After Trump Admits to Attempted Collusion, Rand Paul Invites Russian Delegation to Washington

Today, I met with Chairman Kosachev, and we agreed on the importance of continued dialogue.

Rand Paul said Monday Russian legislators have accepted an invitation to visit Washington, D.C.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul asks a question during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington, DC on July 25, 2018. Paul was one of the few Republicans who defended the president in the resulting backlash.

Paul's was the second unusual diplomatic overture to Russian Federation by Senate Republicans in a month, following the visit of a larger delegation led by Sen.

The invitation comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Moscow, with lawmakers pushing legislation that would levy additional sanctions on Russian Federation for election meddling.

Konstantin Kosachyov, the chairman of the International Affairs Committee, said at the meeting with Paul that efforts to mend ties are hampered by sanctions the United States has imposed in response to Russia's interference in Ukraine, its alleged meddling in the US 2016 presidential election, and other actions. Additionally, the continued consensus of the United States intelligence community of a Russian desire to interfere in the midterms shows that Moscow remains a long-term risk to the USA political system.

"The hatred of the president is so intense that partisans would rather risk war than give diplomacy a chance", Paul said in a long defense of Trump on the Senate floor, days after the summit. "It does not mean we don't have differences. All the Democrats are now happy that new sanctions are being introduced", Paul was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

"They're not going to admit it in the same way we're not going to admit we were involved in the Ukrainian elections or the Russian elections", Paul said.

"We had general discussions about a lot of issues and basically we've decided that right now we will try to is establish a dialogue and solve issues".

Senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev, who was also in the room, reiterated the Russian position that "there was no interference in 2016", adding "there of course will not be any interference in the elections this year".
