Gates Describes Manafort Orders While Defense Hammers 'Secret Life'

  • Paul Manafort's associate says 'hundreds' of emails prove former Trump campaign chief directed fraud

Throughout three days of questioning in a packed federal courtroom a half-hour south of the White House, Gates admitted to a staggering amount of criminal activity he committed both with Manafort and for his own benefit. He also refused to let them ask Manafort's former business associate Rick Gates about his reported extramarital affairs.

After wrapping up the tax portion of their case, prosecutors have moved on to bankers who were involved in extending Manafort loans during his scramble to generate cash in 2015 and 2016 after work dried up following a loss of business in Ukraine.

Overall, the accountant traced more than $65 million flowing into offshore accounts controlled by Manafort, and she detailed for jurors how more than $15.5 million flowed out to fund his lavish lifestyle between 2010 and 2014.

IRS agent Michael Welch said the total includes foreign wire transfers to USA vendors like landscapers and clothiers, wire transfers to buy property, and income reclassified as loans. He is the first person to be tried on charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

The judge's comments on the eighth day of the trial were in response to a written filing by prosecutors arguing that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the Wednesday testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch.

But on Wednesday, Downing suggested that Gates had withheld the extent of his philandering from prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Ellis sustained an objection from the prosecution and Gates never answered the question about four affairs, but some observers said the damage had already been done.

"I have made many mistakes over many years", Gates, 46, replied.

Gates acknowledged that he did for two months and that he took first-class flights and stayed in "fancy hotels" around Europe, but said the money came from bonuses rather than illicit gains.

She said even though she worked with Gates a lot, it was clear to her that Manafort "knew what was going on" in most instances.

China's July exports rise more than expected despite USA tariffs
China's exports soared in July, showing little impact from USA tariffs, as Washington finalises more duties on Chinese imports. The Trump administration already has a list of $200 billion more in tariffs against China that are under consideration.

After Mr Gates described his theft as "unauthorised transactions" instead of embezzlement, Mr Downing prodded him to use the latter term - and Mr Gates ultimately relented, saying: "It was embezzlement from Mr Manafort".

Ex-Trump campaign adviser Paul Manafort's defense seeks to discredit the Mueller team's star witness during cross-examination; Peter Doocy reports on the bombshell day in court. But then prosecutor Greg Andres invoked Trump's name, and Gates' and Manafort's work on the campaign became more explicitly tied to the alleged crimes at the heart of the trial.

The prosecution's case against Manafort doesn't rest exclusively on Gates.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that objective. Andres asked. Gates said he didn't.

Manafort and Gates were the first two individuals indicted in Mueller's investigation into potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. At one point during this signature comparing exercise, Magionos observed, "It looks a bit different, but I'm also not a hand-writing expert". However, Gates also said the agents did not ask about tax returns and "the majority of the Cypriot accounts were closed" at the stage.

According to testimony, he used the accounts to receive payments from Ukrainian oligarchs.

Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano is not pleased with how the judge in the Paul Manafort trial has conducted himself.

"Put aside any criticism", Ellis said at the trial proceedings Thursday morning. "Now we need to bring it to a close, and it's lunchtime".

But his involvement in creating those documents and executing those transactions, they have said, did not extend beyond inking his signature at the bottom.
