NFL National Anthem Protests: Players Kneel, Raise Fists In Thursday Games

  • All eyes will be on the Dolphins quarterbacks during preseason opener

WTVJ Miami reported that Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn raised his fist during the song.

Select members of the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles protested during the playing of the national anthem before their preseason games on Thursday.

The NFL's 32 team owners unanimously approved a new policy this offseason to require players to stand respectfully during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner", but the NFLPA appealed the rule.

Michael Bennett of the Eagles did not participate in the anthem and instead walked out of the tunnel and toward the bench while the anthem was sung, Bowen reported.

In Philadelphia, where the world champs played the Pittsburgh Steelers, Eagles captain and safety Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback De'Vante Bausby raised their fists during the anthem.

The NFL modified its national anthem protocol in May, prohibiting any sort of demonstrations for the 2018 season, but allowing players to remain in the locker room during the anthem if they chose to.

It was a show of solidarity with the ongoing protests against police brutality and racial injustice, launched by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and banned by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in May. Many vowed to risk the fine and continue protesting, despite the policy.

Kaepernick tweeted Thursday night, lauding the action of two players who protested.

The players' union filed a grievance about the policy change, and late last month, the new policy was put on hold while the NFL and NFL Players Association work on a resolution.

Earlier this summer, the National Football League ordered players to stay in the locker room if they meant to kneel for the anthem.
