Charlottesville events marking one year since violent protest

  • Guns banned from `Unite the Right' rally in D.C. amid fears of violent clashes

White nationalists and anti-racism protesters will face off just metres from the White House on Sunday as both mark the one-year anniversary of violent clashes in Charlottesville.

Trump's words contrast sharply with his first public comments on the events last summer, which left 32-year-old anti-racist counterprotester Heather Heyer dead after a suspected white nationalist plowed his auto into a crowd on August 12, 2017.

He was responsible for putting together the Charlottesville rally that led to the death of anti-racism activist Heather Heyer about a year ago.

"I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence", Trump wrote. "Peace to ALL Americans!" the president tweeted.

The comments demonstrate a marked change...

This follows a wave of white nationalist events across the country so far this month, including one in Portland and one in Berkeley.

More than 1,500 counter-protesters plan to gather at various downtown locations, including in the same park.

Among the remembrance events scheduled for Saturday was a "morning of reflection and renewal" at UVA that featured musical performances, a poetry reading and an address from University President James Ryan. It's since been lifted, but there have been multiple marches to the downtown area - in one case, demonstrators threatened to knock the Robert E. Lee statue to the ground. The declarations enable law enforcement to access state resources, including the National Guard, if unrest breaks out at events in and around Charlottesville and outside Washington, where a "Unite the Right 2" rally is set to occur. Soon after though, he said that while there were bad people in the white supremacist group, "you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides". And critics said their delayed response contributed to clashes between white supremacists and neo-Nazis and counterprotesters.

After authorities had forced the clashing crowds of of white supremacists and counterprotesters to disperse, a auto plowed into a crowd, killing 32-year-old counterprotester Heather Heyer.

Government and police officials in the nation's capital say they are confident the city can manage this weekend's planned white nationalist rally without violence.

Students say they're disgusted with the school because it didn't waive medical feels for last year's rally victims.

Lisa Woolfork, a University of Virginia professor and Black Lives Matter Charlottesville organiser, said police are mounting a "huge, overwhelming show of force to compensate for last year's inaction". Two state troopers also died that day in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville.

Trump was heavily criticized, including by Republicans, past year for initially refusing to explicitly condemn the white supremacists who organized and attended the rally.

The group then continued marching, with some members carrying a sign that said, "Good night white pride".

"This anniversary is also a time to look forward".

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, and city officials in Charlottesville announced a state of emergency would be in effect Friday through Sunday in that city and parts of Northern Virginia, outside Washington.
