  • James Anderson celebrates one of his two early wickets on day two

When play resumed after a rain delay, seamer Chris Woakes, brought in to replace Ben Stokes, who is at a court hearing in Bristol, got the prize wicket of the India skipper for 23 leaving the tourists, who trail 1-0 in the series, at 49 for four. Now he has answered any questions about his batting with a Test century at Lord's.

Jimmy Anderson showed he remains a deadly proposition in English conditions taking 5-20 as England bowled out India for a miserly 107 on the second day of the second Test at Lord's, but it was a "selfish" move from Virat Kohli that had Indian fans up in arms.

Joe Root (19) had battled through a hard spell when he first came to the crease and was set to be rewarded with more favourable conditions in the afternoon, only to be undone by Shami with a ball that nipped back and stayed low in the final over of the morning. That meant England were on 137 for five, already 22 runs ahead of India's first-innings total of 107. The sight of big-hitting Jos Buttler at the crease would not have settled their nerves, but such has been the difficulty to score on the Lord's pitch that Virat Kohli and Co. would have doubtless backed themselves to make early inroads.

The all-rounder's unbeaten 120, coupled with 93 from Jonny Bairstow, took the hosts to 357-6, a lead of 250.

Chris Woakes gave Bairstow fine support as England stretched their lead.

Yorkshire star Bairstow also looked set for triple figures but, just six short of his sixth Test hundred, nicked behind off the bowling of Pandya as India finally found a breakthrough. As per the latest reports, England is two down for 37 runs as Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav sent Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings back to the pavilion.

Pope made a promising 28 before he was lbw to Pandya. As first innings go in Test cricket it was a good one.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (29) then joined Rahane in the middle to add 22 runs for the seventh wicket before the old warhorse James Anderson came back to add more misery to the visitors with the dismissal of the Mumbai batsman.

The wicket, which left India 15-3, prompted a downpour so heavy the rest of the players sprinted off the field and overtook a crestfallen Pujara on the boundary rope.
