Zimbabwe's opposition coalition has filed a legal challenge to results of the country's recent election, in a move that delays the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as president of Zimbabwe.

Chamisa came second to Mnangagwa in a closely fought presidential election which saw him emerge with a 44,3 percent of the national vote while Mnangagwa got 50,8 percent.

The Constitutional Court has 14 days from the day the presidential challenge is lodged to render a decision.

Advocate Mpofu said the applicant has enough evidence including alleged statistical misrepresentations by the elections administration body, ZEC and other factors that included an uneven playing field.

There will still be a core European Union team to monitor the election petitions in the urgent, and no doubt fiercely fought, court days ahead. If it does this successfully, the court could order a recount or nullify the result altogether.

Ms. Nauert said the U.S. government is also gravely concerned by credible reports of numerous detentions, beatings, and other abuses of Zimbabweans over the past week, particularly targeting opposition activists.

Analysts say the legal challenge has little chance of success given the courts' historic tilt towards the ZANU-PF, which has ruled since independence from British colonial rule in 1980.

Zimbabwe's defeated opposition faced a deadline Friday to file its legal challenge to try to overturn the July 30 election result, which has been mired in fraud allegations and a government crackdown on opponents.

Diplomats and election observers were present at the hearing in Harare after Biti fled to Zambia but was handed back to Zimbabwean police despite claiming asylum.

He faces charges of inciting the protests last week by proclaiming victory for the opposition.

The US diplomat said the global community, the US included, will continue to make sure that everyone following up on Biti's case was going to respect the opposition politician's "physical integrity, the human rights and constitutional rights and that the constitution of Zimbabwe is respected".

‏Tendai Biti was released earlier today following my intervention.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission said it was concerned that no one was taking responsibility for the deployment of soldiers that the opposition says were harassing its supporters and ordinary citizens in townships at night.
