Kavanaugh's role in President Bush's controversial torture policy and treatment of War on Terror detainees will likely be a heated issue in his confirmation process.

The Senate Judiciary Committee's confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh is scheduled to start on September 4. The hearings are expected to last three or four days.

He further touted the nominee as a mainstream judge with a record of "applying the law as it is written".

But Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who has promised to fight Kavanaugh's nomination, said in a statement that Republicans were in a "mad rush" to hold hearings after deciding to block almost all of Kavanaugh's records from public release.

Republicans want to confirm Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court starts its new term in October. Questioning will begin the following day. Grassley scheduled the hearings before Kavanaugh's records have been released.

Trump has choice words for ex-aide Omarosa
On Saturday, reporters asked the president while on his golf course if he felt betrayed by Manigault Newman: "Lowlife". White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders criticized Unhinged as "riddled with lies and false accusations".

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn criticized Democrats who oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation in a statement. And just because it's an election year, it does not mean that Judge Kavanaugh can not - or should not - be confirmed. It is the first records from the National Archives released as part of the confirmation process.

July 31: Senate Judiciary Democrats request all available documents from Brett Kavanaugh's time in the White House (2001-2006). The panel has additionally received 174,000 pages from his work for Bush in the White House counsel's office.

"Republicans" mad rush to hold this hearing after unilaterally deciding to block almost all of Judge Kavanaugh's records from public release is further evidence that they are hiding important information from the American people, and continues to raise the question, "What are they hiding?'" Schumer said in a statement. Of that small portion, only 5,800 non-substantive documents were released publicly.

The government watchdogs are deeply disturbed by recent reports that Senate Republicans have negotiated a deal with former President George W. Bush for only partial release of Kavanaugh documents in Bush's presidential library, over the objections of Senate Democrats. "They just don't like the fact that his record shows he is fair, independent and adheres to the Constitution, so they are now resorting to obstruction and gridlock to extend their fishing expedition", Martin said.

"The transparent stall tactics and now thinly-veiled attacks on Judge Kavanaugh's character only underscore the strength of the choice President Trump has made", Cornyn said.
