  • Trump Juncker trade war

Turning to the reimposition of U.S. sanctions on Iran after Trump unilaterally quit the 2015 nuclear pact, Altmaier stressed the importance of keeping European business deals in Iran alive.

Still, Khamenei doesn't see an Iranian-US war coming down the pike anytime soon.

Other hint it has only exacerbated long-standing problems within Iran - and pressure has mounted from within the system on President Hassan Rouhani to improve his management of the economy and tackle corruption. Iranian officials already rejected the offer but it is the first time Khamenei has publicly commented.

"If by some force of circumstance there was a possibility for the Iranian government to speak directly with the American regime, we would never negotiate with the current USA government", Khamenei said.

"America's withdrawal from the nuclear deal is a clear proof that America can not be trusted", state TV quoted Khamenei as telling a gathering attended by thousands of Iranians.

The imposed sanctions target Iran's gold and precious metals, as well as the purchase of cars manufactured in the USA and U.S. dollars.

They also appeared to rule out any hope of fresh talks with Washington, which US President Donald Trump had proposed after walking out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions. "We have never started a war and they will not confront Iran militarily", he siad. "Even if we ever-impossible as it is-negotiated with the USA, it would never ever be with the current USA administration", he adds in a follow-up tweet.

Although the other parties to the agreement - Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation - have vowed to resist United States sanctions, many foreign companies have already abandoned projects in Iran for fear of U.S. penalties.

European countries, which still back the 2015 deal, fear Trump's moves will undermine Rouhani and strengthen the hand of his hardline rivals in the clerical establishment.

More than 60 people, including several officials, have been arrested on charges that carry the death penalty.
