  • Astronauts are repairing a hole on wall of International Space Station

They began locking down modules of the station one after another, and were eventually able to detect the source of the problem in the Soyuz spacecraft docked to the ISS.

The ISS is orbiting at an altitude of about 400 km above the surface, so delivering supplies is not easy, so astronauts have to improvise with whatever material they have on hand.

Here's the scary part - even though the leak is on 2mm, if NASA hadn't spotted it the crew would have run out of air in just 18 days.

But according to NASA, the air leak, discovered as the astronauts slept on the International Space Station, is nothing to worry about. "Designers believe this is the result of a micro-meteorite".

Working with mission control in Houston, USA, and Moscow, Russia, the astronauts localised a leak that appears to be in the Russian segment.

The controllers did not feel the leak represented a danger to the crew, who were sleeping at the time.

NASA insisted that the crew was never in any danger, although flight controllers are still monitoring pressure trends inside the space station to confirm the effectiveness of the fix.

Mission control in Houston and Russian Federation had differing opinions about fixing the leak.

Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos, both from Russian Federation.

"A spacewalk for the purposes of repairs won't be required", Rogozin told Tass.

"Program officials and flight controllers are continuing to monitor the situation as the crew works through its troubleshooting procedures", said the latest NASA report on August 30.

A NASA spokesperson stated that they could not speculate at the moment if the three astronauts must return earlier or not, in case the small leak cannot be stopped. "This is a section of the Soyuz that does not return to Earth", NASA explained.

The 250-mile-high (400 km roughly) outpost is home to three Americans, two Russians and one German.
