The S&P 500 opened lower by 2.76 points, or 0.10 percent, at 2,898.37.

Reports that the US President Donald Trump was preparing to go ahead with tariffs on additional $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, as early as next week, dampened investors' appetite for perceived riskier assets - like equities.

"Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland rejoined NAFTA talks on Tuesday, a day after the USA and Mexico announced they had struck a bilateral trade deal".

Canada's main stock market fell Thursday due to unresolved NAFTA talks.

Trade talks between Canada and the United States had yet to clear some remaining hurdles as negotiators struggled to meet a Friday deadline.

According to the latest available data, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 22.1 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 25,964.82, the S&P 500 gained 0.39 points, or 0.01 per cent, to 2,901.52 and the Nasdaq Composite added 21.17 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 8,109.54.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks edged down 2.40 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,732.35.

The FTSE 100 Index closed at 7,432.42 points, down 83.61 points, or 1.11 percent.

Eight of the index's 11 major sectors were lower, led by the energy sector's 1.4-per-cent drop as oil prices were pressured by trade worries.

The Nasdaq is up 1,206.15 points, or 17.5 percent.
