Gulf Coast prepares for Gordon's expected arrival as hurricane

  • NOAA’s GOES-East satellite images show Tropical Storm Gordon over South Florida valid as of 9 a.m

New Orleans director of emergency preparedness Collin Arnold says the storm has the potential to turn into a "low-level hurricane" with potential winds of up to 70 miles per hour (113 kph). The area has already been heavily impacted by this summer's so-called "red tide"- massive algae blooms that have caused waves of dead marine life to wash up along the coast. In St. Tammany Parish, a line of cars reached between 20 and 25 vehicles long at times.

The National Hurricane Center said at 11 p.m. EDT that the storm was centred 330 miles (530 kilometres) east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

"The system could reach category one hurricane status by tomorrow".

A hurricane warning was put into effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border.

Gordon became a tropical storm after having strengthened rapidly overnight, and late Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a hurricane warning for the mouth of the Pearl River, which divides Louisiana and MS in the central Gulf. Still, the southeastern part of the state remains under a tropical storm warning and residents need to be prepared for the storm to shift west, Edwards said. It drenched Florida on Labor Day, forcing officials in Miami and the Florida Panhandle to close beaches due to rough surf and potential rip currents. Many replies to various National Weather Service accounts or other outlets with their pleas that the storm veer spontaneously away, as the Gulf coast is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

A hurricane watch has been issued for portions of the central U.S. Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Gordon approaches.

As much as 3 to 6 inches of rain is forecast across coastal MS and southeast Louisiana over the next few days, and higher amounts could occur, the weather service said in a news bulletin Monday morning.

The city expects to feel the storm's impact beginning late Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday, she said. It predicts rising waters of 3 to 5 feet in an area stretching from Shell Beach, Louisiana to Dauphin Island, Alabama.

Flooding from rainfall may call for evacuations in some areas in Southwest Mississippi, mainly west of Interstate 55, and north of I-10 in Southeast Louisiana. The storm is on track to continue moving west-northwest toward the island of Bermuda through Thursday morning.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect from the Mouth of the Pearl River to the Alabama-Florida Border. Gordon has intensified with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and continues to have an improved structure on satellite and radar (see Fig. 1).
