The National Weather Service in Columbia emphasized earlier Sunday that the impacts of a hurricane can extend more than 100 miles from the storm's center. On Saturday, Loewenthal said the waters off the area's coast measured in the mid-to-upper 80 degrees, which would allow the storm to maintain its strength.

He said: "We are entering the peak of hurricane season and we know well the unpredictability and power of these storms".

- Florence strengthened in the Atlantic Sunday and again became a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. update.

The hurricane center said, "All indications are that Florence will be an extremely risky Category 4 hurricane while it moves over the western Atlantic toward the southeastern United States".

Loewenthal said the area should prepare to see impacts, including rough surf and unsafe rip currents, as early as Sunday. It's too soon to determine if Florence will hit land, where it might hit and what the magnitude of the winds might be.

The official National Hurricane Center track now brings Florence to the North Carolina coast Thursday evening as a Category 4 Hurricane, near Wilmington, NC. Impacts include possible flooding, high winds, and potential storm surge.
