The U.S. East Coast could be hit with a powerful hurricane next week as Tropical Storm Florence continues to strengthen as it moves toward the mainland, forecasters said Saturday.

"Florence is rapidly strengthening this morning", the National Hurricane Center advisory said.

The storm's maximum sustained winds are 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and it is moving west at 8 miles per hour (13 kmh).

McMaster said Sunday that he has asked President Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration.

Forecasters urged residents from SC to the mid-Atlantic to get ready - and not just for a direct blow against the coast. "We are taking Hurricane Florence seriously". That does not many any evacuations are in place: as of now, they're not.

"The bottom line is that there is increasing confidence that Florence will be a large and extremely unsafe hurricane, regardless of its exact intensity", forecasters said.

Florence, the most powerful Hurricane of the three, is expected to barrell through Bermuda and the Bahamas in the coming days before directly hitting the southeastern coast of the United States on Thursday.

Behind Isaac, Helene has strengthened with maximum sustained winds estimated to be at 105 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Dallas officer who killed black man also shot a man in 2017
Police identified the officer as Amber Guyger , a four-year veteran of the department assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division. Renee Hall said the day after the shooting that her department was seeking manslaughter charges against Guyger.

The devastation from 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and 6 six major hurricanes reached near apocalyptic proportions in some regions, causing an estimated $282billion worth of damage.

The National Weather Center warned of unsafe rip currents in popular tourist areas like Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks.

"Red, no swimming flags are flying and everyone must stay out of the water", Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said.

Forecasters said it is too early to know the exact path Florence will take but warned that it could roll ashore in the Carolinas by Thursday. The storm is slowly moving northwest into the Gulf of Mexico.

"This is very scary rain event potentially setting up this week", Rossi said.

With an eye on Hurricane Florence, governors in Virginia, North Carolina and SC have declared states of emergency, warning residents to prepare for a unsafe storm. SC emergency management officials said they were "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster". Roberts said he's telling them to get out of town. "The best safety plan is preparation and common sense".

In an average season, the Atlantic Basin will experience 12 tropical storms, six hurricanes, and two major hurricanes.

Both Tropical Storm Isaac and Tropical Storm Helene are expected to reach hurricane strength but neither is considered a threat to Bermuda. As a major storm, the hurricane is expected to produce life-threatening conditions.
