  • Obama calls midterm votes urgent in rebuke of Trump 'Our democracy depends on it'

He said that Trump isn't the biggest threat to Americans - it's indifference.

Now, as 2018 midterm campaign season gets underway, it's likely a very public Trump-versus-Obama showdown becomes a defining storyline of the year.

Obama continued: "And when people don't participate, then that vacuum is filled by lobbyists and special interests and we get into a downward spiral where people get more and more discouraged and they think nothing's going to make a difference".

It's too early to tell if Obama's engagement will move the needle for either party's turnout on Election Day.

Former President Barack Obama speaks at the memorial service of Senator John McCain at National Cathedral in Washington, Sept. 1, 2018.

"It should not be a partisan issue to say that we do not pressure the attorney general or the Federal Bureau of Investigation to use the criminal justice system as a cudgel to punish our political opponents", he said, a reference to Trump's demands. I'm not making that up. that's not hypothetical.

Obama had so far been reluctant to publicly criticize his successor, although last week he appeared to chide Trump, without naming him, in a eulogy for the late Republican Senator John McCain.

"The claim that everything will turn out okay because there are people inside the White House who secretly aren't following the President's orders, that is not a check", Obama said. "The best thing the president (Obama) could say is this: Vote, vote, vote. Saying that Nazis are bad?" "He's just capitalizing on resentment that politicians have been fanning for years".

These are extraordinary times.

"It didn't start with Donald Trump".

Serena Williams war with umpire Carlos Ramos intensifies as ITF release statement
Osaka has beaten Williams twice this year; she may have won anyway had events gone on in a different fashion. Tough thing for a chair umpire to deal with, as well. "This is her first grand slam".

Both parties are urging their core supporters to get to the polls for the November 6 midterm elections, when Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House of Representatives and two seats in the Senate to gain majorities in Congress and slam the brakes on Trump's agenda.

"In fact, the best explanation of President Trump's victory are the "results" of the Obama Presidency!"

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/APFormer President Barack Obama made a rare mention of President Donald Trump in a speech on Friday.

"It shouldn't be Democratic or Republican to say that we don't target groups of people because of what they look like or how they pray", Obama said.

"As a fellow citizen, not as an ex-president, but as a citizen, I'm here to deliver a simple message that is that you need to vote". "The consequences of any of us sitting on the sidelines are more dire".

After spending much of his post-presidency on the political sidelines, Obama has several events scheduled in coming days where he'll campaign for Democrats.

"For three cycles (2010, 2012, 2014) President Obama fired up Republicans like nobody", Rep. Steve Stivers, the head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told reporters on Friday. Obama is set to speak Friday as he accepts an ethics in government award in IL.

Obama, who is 57, said the greatest threat to USA democracy comes not from any single individual, or even from any group of billionaires seeking to dominate the nation's politics.

And while the speech was not as direct as his remarks in Illinois, Obama did cast the current administration as one that is seizing on division. It also signals a more active role for Obama on the campaign trail on behalf of Democrats trying to overturn GOP control of the House and Senate.
