And given how norm-busting Trump's presidency is - in terms of his relationships to the media, to his own party, to policy - it's also hard to avoid making mountains out of everything, even those things that might be molehills.

Bob Woodward's book Fear: Trump in the White House, and it makes the process behind Donald Trump's transgender military ban appear very messy.

Former Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward speaks during an event sponsored by The Washington Post to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Watergate, June 11, 2012 at the Watergate office building in Washington. He's never going to see that document.

He said that the anonymous letter was outrageous and that Trump should take action immediately.

But Woodward says in his book there was an even more unsafe tweet that wasn't sent, declaring that Trump was withdrawing the family members of US troops from South Korea. Democrats can't stand losing.

Cohn did not detail his complaints with the book, telling Axios: "I am proud of my service in the Trump Administration, and I continue to support the President and his economic agenda".

Chris Christie on Tuesday accused Bob Woodward of acting as former White House adviser Steve Bannon's "stenographer", and said Woodward hadn't performed "rudimentary journalistic fact checking".

But the Pentagon pushed for a more measured response, USA officials said, and the idea was eventually rejected as too risky. Britain, France and the U.S. have warned Syria it will suffer a "much stronger response" if it uses chemical weapons again.

Pence: I'd take lie detector test over NYT essay
Pence was echoed by Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway , speaking on CNN's State of the Union as the hunt for the author continued. Both also said they had no idea who wrote the piece; Trump has said he can name up to five people who could have written it.

"It's (up to) the Department of Justice to make that determination and we're asking them to look into it", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters. Also criticizing the book Tuesday was former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who said on Twitter that "a number of the statements attributed to me and from others to me in the Woodward book are incorrect".

"I don't talk the way I am quoted". I mean, to try to control the presidency while not the president. "Their quotes were made up frauds, a con on the public". The author uses every trick in the book to demean and belittle. "People don't want to go into coal mines and get black lung".

"'It is mostly anonymous sources in here, why should anyone trust you?"

That's a big deal - especially because it confirms much of the daily reporting that has come out of this White House since Trump became President 19 months ago.

The book also quotes Mattis, after a contentious National Security Council meeting on January 19, as saying Trump acted like and had the understanding of "a fifth or sixth-grader".

But as Axios notes, "Cohn cited no specific objections to Woodward's extensive reporting of his private views that Trump needed to be saved from his most risky impulses". "As you know and are living, we are at a pivot point in history", he said. "Fear: Trump in the White House", paints a picture of a commander in chief controlled by a mercurial humor whose own staff works to constrain his worst impulses.
