US capital under state of emergency for Hurricane Florence

  • Mandatory evacuations issued for Outer Banks ahead of Florence

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster announced Monday that mandatory evacuations would begin at noon Tuesday for more than 1 million people on the South Carolina coast. Forecast to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday between Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk, Virginia, the hurricane is for now rated as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 130 to 156 miles an hour.

State of Emergency has been declared by North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

While Florence could punch the Carolinas harder than any hurricane since 1954, New England isn't expected to see much of an impact from the storm. On the current forecast track the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through Wednesday.

"Rapid strengthening is forecast, and Florence is forecast to become a major hurricane this morning, and is expected to remain an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday", it said.

Although the focus on where Hurricane Florence makes landfall is drawing lots of attention, another looming threat could be the worst impact of this monster storm: disastrous, deadly flooding from days of relentless rain.

If a Category 5 hits the southeastern US, "a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse", said the NHC.

The storm could reach as far inland as the Appalachian mountains with heavy rainfall and potential flooding affecting states like Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

"I'm telling them to go inland, but I'm anxious about the rain and tornadoes too", Roberts said.

"The seas are going to get extremely rough and so any boating should be discouraged until this thing moves inland and the seas drop off this coming weekend".

In the reprieve of the storm's eye, NOAA hurricane scientist Heather Holbach captured Atlantic blue skies above Florence's towering vertical walls from the hurricane hunter aircraft.

Forecasters have said that if it lingers over the region, several feet of rain might fall. "Nonetheless, there still would be a very life threatening storm surge of somewhere around 10 to 15 feet".

Tropical expert Dr. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground lays out a potentially catastrophic storm surge scenario for Florence and the Carolinas pointing out the devastating nature of the storm surges produced by two of the three CAT 4 strength hurricanes which have hit the coastline north of Georgia at high tide since 1851: Hurricane Hazel on October 15, 1954 and Hurricane Hugo on September 22, 1989. "In line with that order, Boeing will suspend operations at Boeing South Carolina today so our employees can properly evacuate".

As of early Tuesday morning, hurricane Florence continues to be a formidable storm moving towards the United States.

According to CNN, weather experts say the storm is most likely to hit in the Carolinas.
