The fresh pictures utilise all Four of the satellite's large-self-discipline cameras, providing a panoramic look of the southern sky stitched collectively from sixteen determined pictures.

'We learned from Kepler that there are more planets than stars in our sky, and now TESS will open our eyes to the variety of planets around some of the closest stars, ' said Paul Hertz, Astrophysics Division director at NASA's Headquarters.

TESS has the task of finding planets outside the solar system, which orbit around stars, for that it will observe nearly the whole sky, where it will monitor the brightness of more than 200 thousand stars. Transits happen when a planet passes in front of its star, thus causing a dip in brightness. TESS is picking up the exoplanet-hunting mantle from Kepler and is targeting stars much brighter than Kepler investigated.

TESS, which was launched with the help of the carrier rocket SpaceX Falcon 9 is equipped with four wide-angle cameras that will allow it to search for exoplanets during its two-year mission with the help of a phenomenon known as a transit.

This image is the "first light" science image and captures a huge number of stars and other objects in the image.

To find new exoplanets, TESS takes images of space over a period of 27 days, with a focus on the southern sky during its first year. "This first light science image shows the capabilities of TESS' cameras, and shows that the mission will realise its incredible potential in our search for another Earth", Hertz said. Download TESS "first light" images in HD resolution.

Then, the following year, it will scour the northern sectors. TESS transmits images every two weeks, each time the satellite's unusual cis-lunar orbit returns it closest to Earth. The Kepler telescope has done a fantastic job since launching in 2009, but with that workhorse satellite reaching the end of its life, it's time for the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to take over. The brightness of TESS's targets make them ideal candidates for follow-up study with spectroscopy, the study of how matter and light interact. Come what might possibly, scientists will be ready to burn up TESS's discoveries with flooring-based mostly observatories and the long-delayed James Webb Space Telescope to expose us extra regarding the composition of these a ways away planets.

TESS has also started observations requested through the TESS Guest Investigator Program, which allows the broader scientific community to conduct research using the satellite. "And of course, lots of exciting exoplanet and star proposals as well".
