Absolutely convinced PM Modi is corrupt: Rahul Gandhi

What is staggering is that the Prime Minister is still silent on it.

Former French President claims the Indian government suggested the private firm for the Rafale offset contract.

It interviewed Hollande on phone in which he said: "I intervened in this affair (Rafale) with the two prime ministers, to say that I was keen for this negotiation".

"We are absolutely convinced that the PM of India is corrupt".

Stepping up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said former French President Francois Hollande has called him a "thief" in the Rafale deal and sought a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the agreement to purchase 36 fighter jets from France.

The Union Minister said that despite Gandhi's repeated demands, it is not in India's interest to reveal the price of the deal. "More broadly, the possibility of New Delhi doing a favor for a pro-government corporate titan in the high-stakes, big-money world of arms sales - the optics are terrible, and the reputational costs for the government could be considerable".

"It's much too early to make something of it and talk to him constantly about what and when and stuff like that". It was not the reason for taking him off, of course not, I am fine with him and I think he is fine with me.

At his rally in Dungarpur, Mr Gandhi had referred to the Rafale fighter deal with France and mocked PM Modi's assertions on tackling corruption. Well, during the deal between French and India were on, Hollande and Ambani's got into a new deal. "We did not have a choice, we took the interlocutor who was given to us". "But you (Prime Minister Modi) are not speaking anything", he added. Hollande responded: "We did not have a say on this subject".

Opposition Campaign Congress party president Rahul Gandhi has frequently accused Modi's government of scrapping an earlier 126-jet deal negotiated by the previous Congress government in favour of a personally-negotiated deal for 36 aircraft that cost more on a per-plane basis and unduly benefited Reliance.

The French media report quoted Hollande as saying "we did not have a say in this.the Indian government proposed this service group and Dassault negotiated with (Anil) Ambani group". In this Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence became the "offset" partner of the French.

The party alleges Modi gave preferential treatment to industrialist Anil Ambani, the billionaire chairman of Reliance Group, to the detriment of state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The Defence Ministry, in a statement Saturday, said "unnecessary controversies" are being sought to be created following media reports regarding a statement purportedly made by Hollande concerning the selection of Reliance Defence as the offset partner by Dassault Aviation, the manufacturers of Rafale aircraft.

Well past midnight, PTI quoted the government of France, for which the Rafale deal is vital, as saying "it is in no manner involved in the choice of Indian industrial partners" for the deal. "It is reiterated that neither GoI nor French Govt had any say in the commercial decision".
