Thousands without power in Montreal as Ontario storm spreads to Quebec

The tornado hit on Friday evening, demolishing homes in the town of Dunrobin to the north west of the city before crossing over to the town of Gatineau, which lies directly to the north of Ottawa in the province of Quebec.

Ford was scheduled to tour areas hit by the tornado in Dunrobin, then visit West Carleton High School and Larkin House, where volunteers have been helping shelter and feed people affected by the tornado and storm.

Hydro crews - including extra workers from across Ontario - were working around the clock to untangle and fix fallen power lines and restore electricity to the region. Trees were blown through roofs, vehicles were crushed by debris and tipped over by the wind, and an entire row of hydro poles was toppled on Greenbank Road, one of the city's main thoroughfares.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford pledged the province's full support to Ottawa residents recovering from Friday's tornadoes.

The tornado - one of two that touched down in the Ottawa-Gatineau region - graded out at the EF-3 level, meaning it had wind speeds reaching as high as 265 km/h.

"Throughout the weekend, our crews have worked tirelessly to get the lights back and we believe the majority of customers will have their power back by tonight", Hydro One COO Greg Kiraly said in a release.

Those with power were stepping up Saturday to help strangers with a hot meal, an outlet to charge their phone or a shower.
