  • UN General Assembly 2018: Donald Trump 'turns down' meeting with Iran as he prepares for speech - live updates

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in a signing ceremony for the U.S. -Korea Free Trade Agreement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in NY, U.S., September 24, 2018.

He has disrupted the world order by withdrawing the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord, and threatened to punish North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations for not paying more for their common defense.

Trump expressed gratitude to Moon for his "dedicated efforts" to reach what he called "a historic milestone in trade". In both venues, USA officials say, he is expected to offer a contrast between the path of negotiation chosen by North Korea and that of Iran.

North Korea: "With support from many countries here today we have engaged with North Korea to replace the specter of conflict with a bold and new push for peace", said Trump.

Iran is a major focus of the annual week of United Nations diplomacy, months after Trump irritated U.S. allies in Europe by withdrawing from a 2015 agreement under which Tehran has sharply curtailed its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.

Trump addresses the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. "That was a very risky time", Trump said.

"In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than nearly any administration in the history of our country", Trump proclaimed.

"So true", Trump continued, which caused more laughter in the General Assembly hall.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hit back at U.S. President Donald Trump in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly, but also invited him back to the negotiating table.

"Our actions in and around the Middle East have made clear we will not continue to accept Iran's bad behavior", Pompeo said.

Speaking at a United Nations press conference on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Trump administration is making a "fervent effort" to stop Iran from being what he called the world's largest state sponsor of terror.

On Tuesday afternoon, between events at the UN, Trump briefly chatted with reporters and he dropped this nugget, apparently confusing the concepts of "laughing at" and "laughing with".

John Bolton, the United States national security adviser, is expected to deliver a fierce warning against Tehran at an anti-Iran conference taking place in NY later today.

In a tweet on Tuesday morning, Trump said he had no plans to meet Rouhani "despite requests" to do so.

Trump and Rouhani have traded threats since, and in August, the administration reinstated sanctions against Tehran.

In a sign of how some allies are unwilling to automatically follow Trump's lead, the five remaining parties to the Iran nuclear agreement - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - announced Monday plans to keep business ties alive with Iran, staring down Washington's move to impose sanctions.

"I didn't expect that reaction, but that's okay", he said. On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron argued for an approach to world issues radically different from the one Trump outlined ― calling for multilateralism and worldwide institutions to deal with problems.

Trump's remarks on North Korea were dramatically different from those in his speech previous year at the United Nations assembly, when he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea and mocked the North Korean leader as "Rocket Man" on a "suicide mission".

Mr Trump also boasted that his administration had accomplished "more than nearly any" other in U.S. history.
