He said: "We deleted a line which said that any public vote would be, "on the terms of Brexit".

Meanwhile, in Liverpool, the main opposition Labour Party is creating a different kind of Brexit problem for the Prime Minister by leaving the door open to supporting a second referendum on Brexit.

The wording of the referendum question would be a matter for Parliament but Mr McDonnell told BBC Radio 4's Today: 'If we are going to respect the referendum it will be about the deal'.

The leadership's official position is that it would prefer a general election to be called to give Labour the chance of taking over Brexit negotiations - and only after that could a fresh referendum being considered.

Mr McDonnell was confident Labour could negotiate a good deal with Brussels by 29 March 2019, the date when Article 50 runs out and Britain leaves the European Union.

"If we are going to respect the referendum it will be about the deal". But, speaking at a fringe meeting at Labour's conference in Liverpool, Mr Gardiner said it was time to "inject some realism into the debate".

Since the 2016 referendum, Labour has stuck to a policy of "constructive ambiguity" in a bid to appeal to both "leave" and "remain" voters.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party has been accused of a "farcical" cop out, after refusing to commit to a second Brexit referendumin which voters will be given the option of remaining in the EU.

John McDonnell has said any new referendum should be on the deal.

McCluskey told Labour MPs who have claimed pro-Corbyn activists are trying to get rid of them they should accept party members had the right to choose who their representatives were.

More than 100 constituency parties have submitted motions calling for the issue to be put to a vote.

The key paragraph in the document states: "If we can not get a general election Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote".

She said she was "surprised" Ms Butler praised a council that "issued redundancy notices to their own public sector employees, and failed to protect services too".

Labour - which wants the United Kingdom to remain in a customs union but not the single market - has not ruled out voting for any deal Mrs May brings back from Brussels, ahead of the UK's 29 March departure date. He has strong support among grassroots members, many of whom have joined since he was elected leader in 2015.

Aberavon MP Stephen Kinnock warned: "One thing we know a referendum will not do, it will not reunite our country".

Former foreign secretary David Miliband said it was an "absolute dereliction of duty" for Labour not to say that the deal obtained by the Prime Minister must be put to the people.

Labour's polling numbers have remained relatively stable throughout the scandal, said Steven Fielding, professor at University of Nottingham, but the row continues to reverberate through the party.

"The EU was a social democratic movement, and it was a good idea, but after the financial crash, it chose to bail out the banks at the expense of the people", Brexit supporter Les Thomas told AFP at a protest against a second referendum.

Brexit minister Dominic Raab again ruled out a new vote, describing the suggestion as "for the birds".
