"As we celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, a man with whom we share the same birthday, I urge us all to reflect on the role of Mandela played in peace-building".

Trudeau is beginning his day at the opening of the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, where he's scheduled to deliver brief remarks later this afternoon.

It will be an opportunity for world leaders to reaffirm their commitment to peace and reconciliation.

A statue of Nelson Mandela, who led South Africa's transition from the apartheid system of white minority rule over the majority black population, was unveiled at United Nations headquarters in NY, and delegates addressed a "peace summit" to elevate his memory in this year's centennial of his birth.

It is also the start of the UN Mandela Peace Summit which is the first time where 158 different countries are taking part and are going to be discussing and signing the declaration of peace.

This comes after the Presidential Palace said on Monday that President Ashraf Ghani would not attend the United Nations General Assembly.

Member states at the summit adopted the first resolution of the General Assembly's 73rd session, "committing to demonstrate mutual respect, tolerance, understanding and reconciliation in (their) relations". Alluding to the Trump administration, Cuba's president Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez said recent announcements about military expenditures are "alarming" and are pushing the world into a new arms race "to the detriment of the enormous resources that are needed to build a world of peace".

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa said Mr Mandela believed the United Nations "was the most valuable instrument to advance peace in the world and to develop equality and to advance the prospects of humanity generally".

"The world needs to address both the symptoms and the root causes of conflicts, implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and help developing countries improve their people's livelihood, enhance development capacity, thus to provide the basic underpins for the peace to be sustained", he said.

Mandela was born in July 1918 and died five years ago due to a respiratory infection.

Let us rise to his challenge and use his legacy to make the world a better place.

Trudeau also has a number of bilateral meetings with world leaders on his summit itinerary, including one earlier today with the prime minister of Nepal, who thanked Canada for its humanitarian help following that country's devastating quake in 2015.
