A powerful typhoon headed toward Tokyo late Sunday night after battering western Japan with heavy rain and strong winds, snarling air and land traffic, causing power outages, and forcing evacuations from areas still recovering from recent typhoons.

Streets in the Okinawa prefectural capital of Naha were deserted Sept 29 as winds and rain from Typhoon No. 24 battered the island.

Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan.

As Typhoon Trami (潭美) was approaching Japan, Kansai International Airport near Osaka would close its runway again Sunday, causing the cancellation of flights to and from Taiwan.

At least 386 flights were cancelled, mainly in western Japan, according to NHK.

About 320 domestic and worldwide flights into and out of Naha Airport were canceled for September 29.

The typhoon forced airlines including Japan Airlines Co and All Nippon Airways Co to cancel on Saturday more than 400 flights from or to airports in Okinawa and Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan.

Trami was expected to make landfall Sunday morning in southern Kyushu.

The busy airport was closed for several days after flooding by Typhoon Jebi and a freighter hit the bridge connecting it to the mainland earlier in the month.

All this comes on the heels of a country still reeling from one of the hottest summers on record, deadly rains that inundated central and western Japan, the strongest typhoon to hit the region in 25 years in Typhoon Jebi and a magnitude-6.6 natural disaster on Hokkaido that killed 40.

The typhoon was coming very close to the southern part of Kyushu in southern Japan in the morning of September 30 and was dumping torrential rain in the area.

Five people suffered injuries in storm-related accidents in Okinawa, but no one was feared dead, local officials said. Nearly all of services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line are also being suspended throughout September 30, according to Central Japan Railway Co.
