  • Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he set out Labour's view of Brexit issues in meetings with EU officials

British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn held out an unexpected olive branch to beleaguered prime minister Theresa May on Wednesday when he said that his Labour party would support her if she delivered a Brexit that maintained a customs union and no hard border in Northern Ireland.

Corbyn will say Britain needs a Government "committed to investing in renewables, in jobs and in training" and will promise large-scale public and private investment in wind and solar power, as well as subsidies to make all homes energy efficient.

But on the Today programme, John McDonnell seemed to go further than the carefully worked compromise of last night, offering a bittersweet fudge of his own. What we issued yesterday was some more technical notices to help businesses and others who would need to prepare in a "no deal" situation for doing that.

"We are starting to see movement from London and Brussels towards a Brexit deal and that is helping sentiment", said fund manager Constantin Bolz of wealth manager Portfolio Concepts.

May, meanwhile is in talks with European Union negotiator Michel Barnier in hopes of striking a compromise arrangement that would keep Britain in a single market for goods while seeking a broader trade deal.

One diplomat involved in Brexit talks said his confidence that a deal was in the offing had started to recede.

Taken aback after the chamber broke out in laughter, Trump said: "I didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK". Some have already started and I fear more will follow.

She rejected the argument put forward by Brexit purists that adopting a common rulebook with the European Union would stop Britain striking new trade deals.

'Love Corbyn, hate Brexit': Labour faces Brexit split

With announcements ranging from handing workers shares in companies to expanding free universal childcare, Labour wanted to showcase their planning for an election many feel could come sooner rather than later.

"But that just reinforces the point that there is an impasse if the two wings of our party face up to the fact that we have these elements that differentiate us but the rebel group need to think again because I think we've only got one shot at a negotiated settlement".

Her Tory colleague, Brexiteer Nadine Dorries, said the PM should step down as she had become "handcuffed" to her Chequers Plan and was not spelling out the benefits of Brexit.

Labour has held back from full-throated backing for a second referendum because many of its supporters voted for Brexit, although younger members and numerous conference delegates have been speaking out in favour of another vote.

Delegates at the party conference in Liverpool, northwest England, voted overwhelmingly for a motion that calls for a second referendum in the event that Parliament fails to approve an eventual deal.

But EU officials say that amounts to unacceptable "cherry-picking" of elements of membership in the bloc without accepting all the costs and responsibilities.

Corbyn, a long-time eurosceptic, has kept Britain guessing over his own views, remaining ambiguous.

Delegates at the party's conference voted Tuesday to criticize Israel's use of force against Gaza protests, urge more United Kingdom funding for the U.N. agency for Palestinians and back a freeze on British arms sales to Israel.
