The 29-year-old man died in New Jersey earlier this month after falling ill with Naegleria fowleri.

"The CDC collected water samples and are now investigating to find the source", Kelly Craine, a spokeswoman for Waco-McLennan County Public Health District, told CBS. Parsons added that his park follows all CDC "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".

Samples from the pool have been collected for testing, with preliminary results expected later this week.

The Centers for Disease Control announced Friday that it is testing the waters at BSR Cable Park Surf Resort, in Waco, Tx., amid fears Stabile contracted the illness there.

The park is voluntarily closed until the test results come back.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba which is a single-celled living organism. He later died of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by the amoeba.

Naegleria fowleri is commonly referred to as "brain-eating amoeba" is a free-living microscopic amoeba that is commonly found in warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers and hot springs.

It causes the nervous-system infection primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) by traveling up a person's nostrils and into their brain, but can not be transmitted if a person swallows water contaminated with the bug. It is usually fatal. Death usually occurs within two weeks.

According to the CDC, Naegleria fowleri infections are rare, with just 34 reported between 2008 and 2017. Swallowing water contaminated by the amoeba can not cause the infection. Cases due to the use of neti pots and the practice of ablution have been documented.

"It only got worse the next day, and when his mother went to check on him, he could not move or speak coherently, and he was rushed to an area hospital, where he was treated for symptoms of meningitis", according to NJ.com. It takes an average of five days for symptoms to appear exposure, with headache, fever and nausea the main symptoms.
