Man uses $100,000 meteorite as doorstop for decades

  • Rock used as doorstop for decades identified as $100K meteorite

Upon purchasing it, he noticed a large rock holding the door open, according to Central Michigan University.

Mona Sirbescu, a CMU geology professor, gets asked all the time by people to examine the rocks they bring her - but none ever turn out to be an official space rock.

"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically "no"-meteor wrongs, not meteorites", Sibescu said in a statement from CMU on Thursday, CNN reports".

"Within seconds, I knew it was a real one", Sirbescu said when she saw the meteorite.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., corroborated Sirbescu's analysis that the 22-pound "rock" is, indeed, a meteorite, and is apparently the sixth-largest of its type to be discovered in MI.

"It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically", she said.

A Grand Rapids, Michigan, man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought a farm in 1988.

The man said that the original farmer said he heard the meteorite come crashing down, "and it made a heck of a noise when it hit".

It has been named the "Edmore" meteorite after the town in which the farm is located.

Google Pixel 3 pre-orders apparently start on October 9
For those unfamiliar with the feature, Active Edge is an array of touch sensitive sensors on the sides of Google's smartphones. We are waiting on a duo of Pixel 3 phones, a Pixelbook , a wireless charging stand and the next-generation Chromecast device .

Scientists studied this space rock at Central Michigan University.

She determined that it was in fact a 22-plus pound meteorite, making it the sixth-largest recorded find in MI - and potentially worth $100,000.

Like the farmer, he just thought it was "cool to look at", and let his children take it to school for show and tell.

She found that it was an iron-nickel meteorite with about 88 per cent iron and 12 per cent nickel, a metal rarely found on Earth.

The unnamed man is reportedly actively looking to sell the meteorite, but has not yet found a buyer.

More tests are being conducted to see if the meteorite contains rare elements. He is considered the guru of iron meteorites, Sirbescu said, and is doing a neutron activation analysis to determine its chemical composition.

But he's not hoarding the payday, because 10% of the rock's value is already pledged to CMU's earth and atmospheric science students.

"A piece of the early solar system literally fell into our hands", Dr Sirbescu said in a video made by the university to promote its discovery.

The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering purchasing the specimen.
