  • Nokia 7.1 hands-on: A $350 success story

- Much like the Nokia 6.1, the Nokia 7.1 is also all about offering a premium design language. It runs near stock Android 8.1 as part of the Android One program, is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, and has dual cameras on the rear. Yesterday, the company announced the Nokia 7.1 with Snapdragon 636 chipset, which could be making its way to the Indian market next week.

The Nokia 7.1 will go on pre-order on 5 October across Europe. It will be available in Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel color options.

The Nokia 7.1 announcement has been updated with United States and Australian pricing and release date information. There is also a MicroSD card slot for further expanding up to 400GB. While the Nokia 7 Plus came with a metal unibody design, the new Nokia 7.1 comes with glass back body.

The Nokia 7.1 is shipping with Android Oreo but HMD said it is ready to receive the Android Pie 9.0 update. This 19:9 panel features an FHD+ resolution of 2,280 by 1,080 pixels and functions as a more conventional 18:9 (2:1) screen when not accounting for its notch.

As is the case with other Nokia handsets of late the phone has a ZEISS branded camera set up with dual 12Mp and 5Mp sensors on the back.

The four Russians in the Netherlands were detained on April 13 and expelled to Russia , Dutch Major General Onno Eichelsheim said. Moscow accused the West of "spy mania" after Dutch security services said they had thwarted a Russian cyber attack on the OPCW.

It's an impressive list of features, especially given the Nokia 7.1's £299 asking price. The Nokia 7 Plus users in India are already enjoying Android 9 Pie update, while by the end of this month, the update will reach the users of Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Nokia is still pushing its "Bothie" feature that stitches together images taken simultaneously from the front-facing and rear-mounted camera. Here's how the Nokia 7.1 compares against one of the top mid-range smartphones, Poco F1.

A PixelWorks chip adjusts contrast according to environmental conditions as well as enables the handset to display HDR10 video and upgrade SDR to HDR, too.

A 3,060mAh battery with fast charging capability powers the Nokia 7.1 Connectivity options on the smartphone include dual-SIM slots, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, NFC, and Global Positioning System with GLONASS. The True Wireless earbuds offer 3.5 hours of play time, are waterproof, and can get three charges from the wireless charging case. The Pro Wireless Earphones also offer vibrating notifications and they last up to 10 hours on a single charge. Early buyers will begin receiving their shipments from October 28, whereas 285 Best Buy locations will also be stocking the Nokia 7.1 and allow prospective buyers to try it out from November 4.

Unlike most Android device makers, Nokia is all-in with Android One. The "dual-anodised diamond-cut coloured edges", which we assume is marketing bumf for "shiny and metallic", help to give the Nokia 7.1 a heft not always associated with phones at this price.
