Widespread Failures Reported after FEMA Launches Presidential Alert System Test | Trending

  • On Wednesday FEMA tested its 'presidential alerts' system with messages to most cellphones. But what if I don't want to receive a message from President Donald Trump's administration

The WEA portion of the test, which will be sent to consumer cell phones, will begin at 2:18 p.m. EDT.

"The fact that you can't turn this alert off, that it will be something that will arrive on your phone whether you like it or not, I think was perhaps upsetting and concerning to some people", said Andy Whitehouse, who teaches communications at Columbia University.

Additional results from EAS participant station reception and broadcast of the national test message will be collected over the next month and reported later and compared against previous test results.

Then, about two minutes later, another text message from the Emergency Alert System will go out to all broadcast, cable, satellite and wireless providers.

Did your phone alert you of a odd message this afternoon?

President Barack Obama signed the 2015 "Integrated Public Alert and Warning System Modernization Act" into law in 2016.

Failla said the claims were too speculative to block the test.

Has WEA and EAS Been Tested Before? The plaintiffs said the alert system fails to give people the chance to opt out.

A NY federal judge has refused to block the Federal Emergency Management Agency from conducting its emergency alert test on telephones. Users can not opt out of receiving the WEA test. The WEA is used to warn people about severe weather, missing children (AMBER alerts), and other critical events via cell phone. A FEMA lawyer said via a phone connection to the courtroom that decisions about alerts are at the discretion of the president, just as are many other decisions involving national security. A secondary test will go out at 2:20pm ET from the Emergency Alert System to radio and television.

The test is allowing FEMA to assess "the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message to determine whether improvements are needed". You'll get a message on your phone with a tone & vibration. It can also be used regionally for emergency information like AMBER alerts.

Didn't get the president alert from FEMA on Wednesday?

This message and will be labeled a "Presidential Alert" and, yes, will be coming at the direction of the White House.

Still, a group of New Yorkers is suing in federal court saying they can't be forced to receive the alerts because they violate their right to free speech. They failed, at least when it came to the test. J.B.

It is unknown if Trump will attempt to misuse this power as a political tool to make announcements.
