  • Banky's painting self-destructs

A Banksy painting "self-destructed" last night after it was sold for more than €1.1 million.

Shortly after, the the canvas was shredded to pieces by artwork's frame, which was also made by Banksy.

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed", said Alex Branczik, head of contemporary European art at Sotheby's.

There's no word on how the shredder started operating at the key moment after the auction, though it could have been activated by a remote mechanism.

Girl With Balloon, a painting by British artist Banksy, spontaneously destructed at a Sotheby's auction in London in an apparent prank by the anonymous and mischievous artist.

The artist himself posted a photo of the shredded work on his Instagram page with the caption, "Going, going, gone".

Previously in 2012, a different copy of the "Girl with Balloon" painting sold for between £15,000 - 25,000 GBP (approximately $19,680 - 32,800 USD) at a Bonhams auction.

A spokesperson for the auction house told the publication that they have been in touch with the purchaser of the piece, who was "surprised by the story". "You could argue that the work is now more valuable", Branczik said.

The move is the latest in a long history of anti-establishment statements by the street artist, who claims he does not make any money from his artworks.

Banksy is a Bristol-born artist whose true identity - despite rampant speculation - has never been officially revealed. It shows a young girl reaching up towards a bright red heart-shaped balloon.

He came to prominence through a series of graffiti pieces that appeared on buildings across the country, marked by deeply satirical undertones.
