  • Sen. Susan Collins R-Maine arrives to view the FBI report on sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill Thursday Oct. 4 2018 in Washington

Murkowski has expressed unease with the sexual assault allegations lodged against Kavanaugh, which he denies.

"It is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy", she warned. If that succeeds, a final roll call was expected on Saturday.

The months-long battle over Kavanaugh's nomination has gripped Washington, laying bare the partisan gridlock on Capitol Hill and the political polarization of America just a month before midterm elections.

"I believe that Brett Kavanaugh is a good man".

The Maine senator spoke with Republican Sen.

Sarah Palin. While Alaska voted for President Donald Trump by a 15-point margin in 2016, Murkowski was elected with broad support from non-Republican voters.

More than 100 Alaskan women had made the trip in hopes they could sway such a pivotal vote.

Flake, who is not running for re-election, frustrated his fellow Republicans last week by forcing the GOP leadership to agree to an FBI investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh arrives for his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing in Washington, U.S., September 27, 2018.

A lone Democrat, Joe Manchin, voted in favour of advancing the process on Friday morning, but had not yet stated his position on the final vote.

A last minute deadline oriented FBI investigation appeared to gave a near clean chit to Kavanaugh, which Is believed to have tilted the balance in his favor. Justice Anthony Kennedy, who Kavanaugh will replace, retired this year after decades of being a swing vote on the court. "The times they are a'changin", she said.

Earlier today, Senate lawmakers backed Kavanaugh by 51 to 49 in a procedural vote that moved the Republican-controlled Senate toward a definitive decision.

"I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh", Ms. Collins said, drawing applause from her colleagues, many of whom came to the floor to hear her tour de force defense of the political center. Republican presidents nominated eight people to the Supreme Court while the GOP held the majority in the Senate.

Flake later told reporters he would support confirmation unless something significant changes.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that "We can salvage some decency here at the end", by rejecting Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

The dramatic conclusion: Collins is a Republican - and she, like almost every member of her party in the Senate, will approve Kavanaugh's appointment.

During the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings on Kavanaugh's nomination, Republican Senator Jeff Flake was confronted by a survivor of sexual assault, who implored Flake not to support the nominee.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Daines said he will walk his daughter down the aisle for her wedding.

It's important to remember Collins hasn't had a tight race for Senate since she was first elected in 1996.

It's not a huge surprise that Manchin voted for Trump's nominee considering he's running for reelection in a state the president won by almost 42 percentage points over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

"From the start of this process, I promised my constituents that I would look seriously at Judge Kavanaugh's record and cast my vote based on the facts I have before me and what is best for West Virginia".
