The GRU was also accused of trying to hack the investigation into the 2014 downing of a Malaysian Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine.

The report did not reveal the nature of the cyber-attacks or whether these were successful.

An online database for auto registration in Russia showed that Aleksei Morenets, whose full name and date of birth are the same as one of the Russians expelled by the Dutch, sold his vehicle in 2004, listing the Moscow address where the Defence Ministry's Military University is based.

Senator Cormann backed the approach of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands in calling out Russia's behaviour.

"The incidents identified by Canada and our allies, including the GRU's attempt to undermine the work of the OPCW, underscore the Russian government's disregard for the rules-based worldwide order, global law and established norms", the statement said. "And that's what happened today", he told reporters in Saskatchewan.

"That's how you make the world safer - when we act together to call out this sort of behaviour".

The British ambassador to the Netherlands said men caught with spy gear outside OPCW, for example, were from the same GRU section (Unit 26165) accused by American investigators of having broken into the Democratic National Committee's email during the 2016 USA presidential election.

Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld made the allegation at a press conference in the Hague, saying Dutch authorities disrupted the attempt by Russian intelligence agents in April.

Russia's GRU military intelligence was blamed for the failed operation, which allegedly targeted the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and was thwarted by Dutch military intelligence with the help of the UK.

But the accusations deepen Moscow's isolation at a time when its diplomatic ties with the West have been downgraded over the poisoning of an ex-spy and while it is under U.S. and European Union sanctions over actions in Ukraine.

The United States on Thursday charged seven Russian intelligence officers with conspiring to hack computers and steal data from the nuclear energy company Westinghouse Electric Co as well as anti-doping watchdogs, sporting federations and an global agency probing the use of chemical weapons.

The Indian government says it has evidence there are extremists who pose a threat to the country's security among the Rohingya. The interim plea, seeking urgent measures to stop the proposed deportation of seven Rohingya, was filed on a pending PIL.

"It is evident from the allegations in today's indictment that the defendants believed that they could use their perceived anonymity to act with impunity", John Demers, the USA assistant attorney general for national security, said at a press conference announcing the charges.

Britain said the GRU was associated with a host of hackers including APT 28, Fancy Bear, Sofacy, Pawnstorm, Sednit, CyberCaliphate, Cyber Berkut, Voodoo Bear and BlackEnergy Actors.

The Dutch spy chief said the Russians had originally taken a taxi from a GRU base in Moscow to the airport, and some of their mobile phones were activated in Moscow near the agency's headquarters.

The British ambassador to the Netherlands said the men caught with spy gear outside OPCW were from the very same GRU section (Unit 26165) accused by American investigators of having broken into the Democratic National Committee's email system before the 2016 United States election.

Russian agents targeted anti-doping organizations to gather information to undermine the investigation and embarrass non-Russian athletes.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency was a prime target.

The Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said he would talk to allies about imposing further sanctions on Russian Federation.

Russian hackers' activities were exposed following the seizure of laptops from four suspects briefly detained in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands released copies of passports of the four men, which identified them as Alexey Minin, Oleg Sotnikov, Evgenii Serebriakov and Aleksei Morenets, all in their 30s or 40s.

Nato Secretary general Jens Stoltenberg also added that the alliance stood "in solidarity" with the decision by the Dutch and British governments to "call out" Russian Federation for its actions.
